John Deere, a global leader in agricultural equipment leveraged Starlink to deliver satellite-based internet connectivity to farmers. This industry-first collaboration integrates Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite network with John Deere’s precision agriculture technologies, branded as JDLink™ Boost.
Ruggedized Starlink terminals and 4G LTE modems are installed on compatible John Deere machines, enabling seamless connectivity to the John Deere Operations Center for real-time data sharing, remote diagnostics, and autonomous operations.
Launched in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, the solution targets both new and retrofitted equipment, with plans for potential expansion.
CHALLENGE
60% of farmers and ranchers in the U.S. do not believe they have adequate internet connectivity to run their businesses. According to a report by the United Soybean Board, “their productivity contributes to nearly $133 billion to U.S. gross domestic product,” a number that could multiply significantly with fast, reliable internet.
Aaron Wetzel, VP of Production and Precision Ag Production Systems for John Deere, emphasizes the importance of connectivity: “The value of connectivity to farmers is broader than any single task or action. Connectivity unlocks vast opportunities that were previously limited or unavailable.” This connectivity gap hinders real-time access to data for crop monitoring, irrigation, and harvesting, reducing operational efficiency significantly.
